Global Game Jam 2026

I've been a bit quiet but that's because we've just had the game jam, so let's talk about that! The theme for the jam this year was "mask" which is pretty open-ended and I saw a lot of cool prototypes from my jam site.

My team created a short game called "Powermasque" where you platform as a superhero over the city by using different abilities from masks. The four masks: double jump, laser eyes, "fire frost" and superspeed. Unfortunately, the game did not compile on the machine we were working on, however the source code is available on the jam page, itch and GitHub repository.

For the previous three jams, I'd been working solo on my projects and helping out on a few teams when I had the time or on a break. It was quite refreshing to work with a bunch of people again and produce something cool. Despite the fact we were missing some assets due to time constraints, the end product resembles at least something and we can always come back to it at a later date.

I worked on the programming with Alex. Alex came up with a pretty unique control scheme for equipping the masks where you held left-shift and then pressed a direction on the movement keys. At first, the player did move when we did that but we disabled the input of the controls through a flag that prevented movement while a mask was being selected.

I didn't create any music for this jam because my options were a little more limited. I did record some sound effects with Jacob, although they are goofy and funny - but that's the point of the jam: have a good time and work with a team.

I definitely enjoyed this year and I can't wait for next year! I'm debating putting some time aside for another jam on itch or something, but I need to figure out what's happening. I'm planning to return to this project and a few others with some collaborations to create some more works for my page.
